ParticipantThat is a hard question. I lost Silver status just before they decided to allow people to keep their status going pro tem – wife got to keep hers!
The way things are going I would not be surprised if travel normality to years to come back, rather than months. If you have a use for them other than as flights then I would seriously consider it.

ParticipantResult Alert!
My complaint to the US DOT resulted in an email from Air NZ last night which included the following:
“Upon reviewing your booking details, your journey is covered by United States Department of Transportation regulations, where you are entitled to a full refund of your unused fare including refund for ancillary fees such as seat selection.
This has been requested and the refund will be processed back to the original form of payment within timeframes required under the departments refund regulations.”
The system worked!

ParticipantReally it’s time that NZ brought our regulations into the 21st century on the issue of refunds.

ParticipantThe US DOT had accepted my complaint and requested a response from Air NZ…..

ParticipantJust spoke with them.
Their view is that unless it was booked in the US and paid in US$ it isn’t covered by DOT rules.

ParticipantInteresting.
The flight was AKL-YVR-LAX-AKL
Would that still count?

ParticipantLong part time we changed our legislation on that.
Given border and virus issues, I don’t think there’ll be a huge queue of people waiting to travel the world within the 12 months and I think that they’ll face some fairly irritated customers if they just keep the money.

ParticipantGood, I hope.
The sooner the ghastly 777 is gone forever the better!

ParticipantI stayed at the Galleria in the end – in the Hilton Post Oak.
Interesting area and amazing mall to shop in if you have spare cash! If anyone is looking for Rimowa, that is available in several of the stores there but the USA is not a very competitive place to buy it – Australia is cheaper since you can get the GST back and Germany is cheaper still.
The Hilton was in need of a refurb and was looking a bit tired. I was on the 14th floor with Executive Club access. Hilton have a lot to learn about Executive Clubs in hotels and should spend some time in a Sofitel in Asia! It has a free shuttle to take you anywhere you need to go within 3 miles of the hotel.
On the other leg, I stayed at Staybridge Suites near the airport at IAH. Recommended – has free food in the evenings, free breakfast, free coffee and soft drinks all day and was very comfortable. Free airport shuttle.

ParticipantI’d kill for Elite. I have Silver and requalified this year but probably won’t next time because the longest flight I have planned was paid for with APD.
If I was close like that, I would make darned sure I got it.

ParticipantI let my UK passport lapse years ago. It was expensive to replace and offered me no benefit really – and it’s not as if they can decide not to issue me a new one since I was born there.
It amuses me that they always stamp my NZ passport “No recourse to public funds and work prohibited” when I enter the UK since, as far as I can work out, my rights by citizenship trump the stamp in my NZ passport.
