Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia have announced their Trans Tasman Alliance will end in October 2018.
Both airlines joined together in 2010 and formed an alliance for all Trans Tasman services between New Zealand and Australia that saw both airlines split their routes. The partnership also saw Virgin code-share flights on Air New Zealand domestic services, and Air New Zealand code-share services on Virgin Australia domestic services. In September 2013 the original Alliance was extended for another five years.
The relationship between both airlines has been a rocky one in recent years - Air New Zealand at one point owned 25.9% of the airline, but sold down it's stake after a 2016 boardroom spat when Air New Zealand CEO Christopher Luxon unsuccessfully tried to oust Virgin Australia CEO John Borghetti.
Customers booked with Air New Zealand to travel on a Virgin Australia service (or vice versa) after 28 October will be contacted by the airline they made the booking with.
