I boarded quite early yesterday and was sitting in 1C. It was interesting to see 3 people sent back from the plane to the gate because they presented their phones to crew but had no seat # on it.
The issue is simply people not refreshing the app once a seat # is pushed to it if you haven’t selected one prior to travel. The fact the gate scanner will let the person board though is fine, but with no seat # they don’t know where to sit.
It seems a bit of a flaw in the business process – I wonder how much testing went into the idea before it was launched? The app really shouldn’t have a barcode visible until you’ve refreshed it and/or selected a seat.
Can’t the app do an auto-refresh when opened, or Air NZ push a seat number once allocated?
