ParticipantLooks like Air NZ AKL premium check in has finally moved to using the machines for passport checks after the elevators but if you’re flying non partner airlines manual processing remains for express path. I’m sure that will be updated soon enough though.
Wish they’d hurry up and follow suit with losing the departure cards like Aussie is. Apparently not quite as easy for NZ.

KeymasterA bit off topic, but why is harder here to get rid of the departure cards?

Something about Oz having APIS system to get the same info. We don’t. So hang onto those pens a bit longer!

At least the NZ ones are super easy to complete, especially if you are a Kiwi passport holder. Don’t even have to sign.
I always have a stash of AU and NZ departure and arrival cards at home so I can fill them out ahead of time to ensure I get through security and immigration and into the lounge as quickly as possible.

I keep thinking of doing this but always forget to collect the cards. Should do next time!

ParticipantArrival cards I’m happy filling out on the plane, Oz departure cards will be no more. NZ departure cards I pick them up and walk and write at the same time so I’d probably only save 30 seconds if pre-filled. Mind you if you’re travelling with family or infrequent travellers then you may save more time.

ParticipantCan’t the NZ govt just insist that the airlines collect the info – then when you checked in for the flight you’d answer the questions as well – the questions aren’t the problem remembering your passport no and flight no is!

KeymasterI’ve always wondered why they couldn’t do it on the SmartGate machines

ParticipantSo there’s only 1 machine but a gate so groups or minors can go through for manual processing.
Interestingly enough security has has done a change around. You’re now off down the hall with the masses and no fast track screening. But to be fair there were 6 screening gates open with a guy directing you to whichever lane was shortest rather than people deciding for themselves and it all flowed amazingly quickly. Especially with school holidays. If they keep that pace up I don’t think they’ll need a separate fast track lane. New layout for duty free is a bit disorientating.
Roadworks around airport and ‘roadworks’ inside – great!
