Z Energy are currently offering triple Airpoints Dollars on all fuel purchases this weekend for Air New Zealand Airpoints customers. The promotion runs from 12am Friday 29th September until 6am Monday 2nd October.

Z normally offer APD1 per NZ$100 spend with no minimum purchase - which means if you're filling up with a fairly typical NZ$75 spend on fuel that you'll earn APD0.75c. The promotion this weekend will increase this to APD2.25 on a NZ$75 fuel spend.

While the promotion may sound appealing it's worth noting that Z offer no fuel discounts to Airpoints customers. Fly Buys customers at Z get 6cpl off fuel all day every day as well as earning Fly Buys points on top of this.

BP and Caltex offer 6cpl off fuel all day every with a OneSmart card, while Mobil offer 6cpl off all day every day with their Mobil Smiles card. Even my local New World and Pak 'n Save offer 6cpl off vouchers all day every day with any purchase at their stores.

If you're spending NZ$75 on fuel (roughly 38 litres based on my local Z, BP and Mobil offering 91 octane at NZ$1.979 per litre) that 6cpl equates to a NZ$2.28 saving - you'd be a few cents better off visiting any other petrol station and using their stock standard 6cpl discount than you would be taking advantage of this triple points promotion.

There are no real benefits to visiting Z regularly if you're an Airpoints customers - Fly Buys customers save 6cpl all day every day and earn Fly Buys points on top, but with Z not offering fuel discounts to Airpoints customers (no doubt to protect the Fly Buys scheme they are a part owner of) their regular Airpoints Dollar earn is an incredibly poor offering. This offer at least makes the deal revenue neutral.
