Does anyone know what type of in-flight wireless product AirNZ will be deploying?
I was flying back on Singapore a350 over the weekend and the in-flight wireless was amazing. The package that I purchased was $25USD for 24 hours of unlimited internet. Meaning I can use it all the way to Europe on different aircraft. The speed was also good enough to have a Google Hangouts chat call.
If AirNZ had something similar it would be a game changer.

Did they block any websites/apps etc.? Did you try a speedtest? I booked the wrong flight on the way back from Hong Kong, meaning we travelled on a Boeing 777 to Auckland, instead of choosing to fly the new Airbus A350 with in flight internet. Would’ve loved to see if Skype would work!
April 18, 2017 at 9:19 pm NZST #1866Steve BiddleKeymasterWhile I haven’t heard anything definitive lately the last I heard one of the A321neo’s arriving later in the year will be the first test aircraft along with one of the 777-300ER’s that will be upgraded during it’s refit. It’s possible that an A320neo could arrive first now as there have been delays with the A321neo.
Air New Zealand will be one of the first airlines in the world to deploy Inmarsat’s Global Xpress solution so it will be very interesting to see how it performs.
April 18, 2017 at 9:47 pm NZST #1868Paul SpainKeymasterI came across this article which covers someone testing Global Xpress for Aviation aboard a Lufthansa flight a few weeks ago. They were getting speedtest results in the range of 1.4Mbps – 14.2Mbps. This was able to deliver consistent YouTube video in High Definition (720p) without interruption.
I had heard of potential speeds quite a bit faster than that – but when you consider the total speed is split between all active users on the flight I would imagine those results could be fairly normal on Air New Zealand flights. I look forward to trying out the new Wi-Fi during the year.

Interestingly enough, budget airline Norwegian have offered a free service since last year. While recently flying to Sweden from LGW, I was pretty impressed with the speed. No blocking of websites (mind you not going to watch porn as some would lol) and the general quality.
I paid $1 on Emirates last year for 500mb ( first 10mb free) bit wasn’t as impressed with theirs. With the exception of the odd tweet being sent, çonnection wasn’t great which I can only put down to the full flight.

Unfortunately sharing 1.8mbit of L-Band satellite connectivity on a plane that seats over 500 people is never going to be great, especially when they practically give it away
